Why are you running? What are your top two policy objectives?
Cleaning up our lakes, environmental sustainability and outreach to people of color regarding environmental issues in general.
What qualifications and/or experience make you a strong candidate for elected office?
Being a lifelong resident of Dane County, I have lived in the 13th district for 25 years, in two neighborhoods so I have first hand knowledge of the issues that affect this district and the opinions of my constituents. Additionally, I have experience with the County issues after serving on the County Board. I have promoted sustainability across all County operations, using the model called "The Natural Step" which originated in Sweden. With another supervisor we created the 'SMART' fund which are funds allocated to County departments for specific projects which reduce pollution, CO2 and saving energy plus saving the County money. I have been a member of the Lakes & Watershed Commission and have a lot of experience with lake issues, as well as groundwater issues.
Will you help us implement OWR’s policy objectives at the local level? How? You can consult OWR's platform at: https://ourwisconsinrev.com/program/
Yes. By supporting and introducing resolutions to the County Board and working with the County Executive. There are many items in the OWR that I could mention, a few are (and I am NOT the complete list that I would support) include a $15 minimum wage, "clean water and air we all depend on, including limits on high capacity wells, CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations), mining, and other environmentally-harmful practices " (I introduced a resolution about grounds water and high capacity wells which other counties in the state were supporting), automatic voter registration, strengthen the rights of the LGBTQ community, and more. This is NOT a complete list of what I would support, this is only a small sampling.
What is your plan to win? Feel free to list (or provide web links to) any endorsements you have already received, the size of your campaign team, your fundraising strategy, and any other relevant information.
I do not have an opponent.
Would you be willing to fight to suspend Voter ID laws in Dane County? How would you do this?
Yes. I will support actions that we can take regarding voter ID laws. I support funding for voter education, and registration.
What (if any) alternatives to incarceration will you support as County Board supervisor?
I have always alternatives to incarceration. The best thing we can do is to keep people out of our criminal justice system. As for my record, I have always supported funding mental health programs (for 2018 the County will spend $34 million on adult mental health) and I will continue to do so. People with mental health issues should not be in jail, and they should NOT be in solidary confinement. Additionally, in the past I have supported the vehicle registration fee. I also supported it in the 2018 budget.
What strategies would you pursue to increase the funds for community-based mental health and AODA Services and improve the availability of affordable housing across the county?
In my neighborhood, we have a variety of income levels and housing (low income to high income). I live near the Bayview Community (located in the Triangle neighborhood), which is private low income, section 8 housing, and have served on its board for over 10 years. As for my position on the County Board, I will continue to support funding for mental health programs. Working with other supervisors to build consensus is my strategy to retain and increase funding for any programs, specifically within human services. Again, I have always supported funding for affordable and low income housing.
